Hydrocephalus : The Faith and Science factor

    BySkyewaters February 22, 2018

Can you honestly say that the circumstances surrounding the death of Travis Shumate have not affected you?  Or at the very least made you think..?  Whether you have Hydro yourself or someone you love has it, really doesn’t matter.  I’m sure many of us have hit a level of discomfort and have even wondered “Can…

I’m a member of the Hydrocephalus family…Never Alone

    BySkyewaters February 15, 2018May 23, 2018

Family.  What defines it? Because of all the support groups for Hydrocephalus, I belong to and through my blog, I incorporated the phrase at the top of today’s post in my Hydro Logo.  Nothing brings it home more just how big and affected this family is when one of our own succumbs to the condition. …

So how does it happen? A shunt breaking inside your brain, that is…

    BySkyewaters February 12, 2018May 23, 2018

I honestly don’t have the answer to this question…all I know is, that it has and can happen. If I thought this condition was scary before, I’m definitely on a different page today.  Travis Shumate was a fellow Hydro warrior who unfortunately had this happen to his shunt.  It was too close to his brain…

    Shunts & shunt malfunctions

    BySkyewaters February 7, 2018May 23, 2018

What if the only way to save your life, was by inserting a thin piece of tubing into your brain and leading it to another part of your body?  How would you feel about that?  I get shivers every time I think about how they actually get this contraption into a human being.  But, there…

Do we depend on doctors too much?

    BySkyewaters February 7, 2018May 23, 2018

This is a bit of a tough one for me and admittedly a double-edged sword.  I tend to want to see the good in someone regardless of the wrong they do (within reason).  More so, I remind myself to give people the benefit of the doubt, should the situation require it.  With that said, it’s…

    “There must be a reason…you know, a reason why you’re alive…”

    BySkyewaters February 1, 2018May 23, 2018

I didn’t expect a wave of emotion to come over me just by someone else uttering those words to me.  She was sincere in her questioning, compassionate in her approach and tender in her responses – the Sonographer who performed a pelvic and abdominal scan on me today.  Why I was there…is not of importance…

Diagnosis with…no clear direction, guidance or full disclosure

    BySkyewaters January 25, 2018May 23, 2018

How many of you received your or your loved one’s Hydrocephalus diagnosis ticking one, all or more than one of the boxes above? When I was diagnosed, age 29, the word Hydrocephalus was entirely new to me.  To say it was foreign, would probably be an understatement.  I went through that time, receiving my diagnosis…

“The real core of being a survivor is continuing to survive”

    BySkyewaters January 21, 2018May 23, 2018

Life doesn’t always afford us the choice of whether or not we’ll survive what it throws at us.  Be it a challenge at work, life in general, family matters, ill health, etc.  Some of us have a little more on our plates to deal with than others which is why some people who cross your…

    Hydrocephalus the Elephant

    BySkyewaters January 6, 2018May 23, 2018

Hydrocephalus has become…the elephant inside my head the room.  The thing we never talk about, the thing people around me know exists but pretend is not there. The thing that, despite my trying to do the same as those around me (when in Rome, do as the Romans do), I’ve failed miserably to push aside, time…

Hydrocephalus : What’s your 2018 going to be like?

    BySkyewaters December 31, 2017May 23, 2018

With every new year comes a wave of resolutions.  We set out goals which, we hope to achieve or attain.  Some we succeed at, some fail as soon as they begin and others…well, let’s just say we manage to take detours that sometimes leave us pondering. This new year, I’ve decided that I won’t expect…
