Hydrocephalus : Do you ever feel like you’re jinxed? Well I do…

    BySkyewaters January 4, 2017January 4, 2017

It feels as if every time I decide to have a positive attitude and WILL myself to feel good, it gets turned upside down.  I started off the new year on a positive note and even posted this in some of the Facebook groups. Simply because I want us all to have a year of…

Hydrocephalus : Making sense of it all

    BySkyewaters December 28, 2016December 28, 2016

When I was 15 years old, I contracted viral meningitis – I was in my last year at school and this was just before my last exam. 7 years later, I contracted it again – nearly 3 months after giving birth to my eldest son and before going back to work. 5 years later, I…

Hydrocephalus : Thank God for GPS!

    BySkyewaters December 20, 2016

I’ve never been good with directions but since being diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, with all it’s mental challenges, I’d say it’s 1000 times worse.  It really doesn’t matter if I’m taking them or giving them. For example, if I were to be sitting in a car and directing someone, I’d physically have to wave my hand…

Hydrocephalus : Dealing with the different you Pre-diagnosis vs Post-diagnosis as an adult with Hydrocephalus

    BySkyewaters December 15, 2016December 17, 2016

Being diagnosed at the age of 29 with Hydrocephalus, I have a Pre-Me version of myself (in my head), lurking beneath the surface. I say lurking because that person somehow feels surreal to me…like a ghost. I am definitely not the same person despite what others may think or see when they look at me….

When people take advantage of your good nature

    BySkyewaters December 13, 2016

I don’t think of myself as the kind of person who would purposely take advantage of anyone else. In fact, I know I’m not.  But, it gets me thinking about people who do this though.  What is it that drives them?  How do they get it right to disregard the next person?  Imagine if someone…

How stress adds to my memory issues

    BySkyewaters December 6, 2016

Regardless of what any Neurosurgeon or Neurologist has told me over the last couple of years, my short-term memory has definitely been affected.  And, no it hasn’t improved as the textbooks tell “them” it should after a short period following a brain operation. It feels like ever since my first shunt surgery, I’ve been fighting an uphill…

The weird thing about getting older (Well, maybe not so weird…)

    BySkyewaters December 4, 2016December 6, 2016

When I was younger, I used to hear adults saying things like “Life goes by so quickly“. Or “Kids grow up so quickly, enjoy them while they’re young” Or “Don’t live with regrets“. Or “Look after your body and yourself“. Most of these things escapes the mind of a young and naive person.  Being young…

Hydrocephalus : Passing an ETV post op hurdle

    BySkyewaters December 2, 2016December 2, 2016

2 December marks my 7 year post op hurdle. I’ve done it…defied the odds!  (She says optimistically). I was told after my operation, that the ETV could close and it normally happens within 5 years.  Whether I’ve come to the end of the track or am charging ahead toward the next hurdle…who knows? Every year…

Hydrocephalus : What kind of relationship do you have with your NS (Neurosurgeon)?

    BySkyewaters November 29, 2016

Good “bedside manners” is a quality sought in a relationship with a prospective partner and should effectively be the same when choosing your Neurosurgeon (figuratively speaking of course). Would you go into a relationship with someone who has a bad rep?  How is one person’s view different from the other? I’ve consulted with surgeons who, in…

Selective Mutism : When the vulnerable don’t fend for themselves…

    BySkyewaters November 26, 2016May 23, 2018

Kindy (Daycare) had become more enjoyable for Kathryn and I think this was because she now had friends. She is always selective in who she makes friends with. She’s never been part of a group of friends but gravitates more towards one or two. She was able to “communicate” with her teachers via her friends…
