Positive self-talk is so much better!

Positive self-talk is so much better!

Ever hear of negative self-talk? I’m sure most people have and are VERY familiar with it. I know I sure am. There’s NO shame in that! However, I have found that the opposite, (though it requires effort), is much more beneficial.

For those of us diagnosed with hydrocephalus; be it from birth or acquired later in life:
Given the different stages of life, this condition, and how it affects YOUR life;

What advice would you give a previous version of yourself, at any given moment in time?

THIS IS MINE (Example only – one phrase or sentence will do)

TO MY 29-YEAR OLD SELF

(Diagnosed with hydrocephalus)

  • You will face many obstacles, even from people who should know better. Regardless, keep persevering.
  • As frustrating as it is, keep going and continue advocating for yourself.
  • Trust your gut. You know your body best.
  • Don’t accept defeat.
  • Your life matters and so do you!

TO MY 31-YEAR OLD SELF

(Partial shunt revision, whole shunt replacement, emergency ETV – 5 and a half months pregnant)

  • It’s a scary time but you’ve got this.
  • Both you and your baby will be OK. Don’t be afraid.
  • In time, you will learn to walk again, feed yourself and speak without a stutter.
  • Work will be challenging and your memory will be worse than it was before. But, you will develop strategies that will see you through. And, you will excel!

THE YEARS IN-BETWEEN

(Continuously dismissed and gaslighted by doctors)

  • Keep looking for a surgeon who will listen. As frustrating as it is. You CAN do this!

TO MY 44-YEAR OLD SELF

(Vision loss due to suspected ETV closing. Brain bleed during repeat ETV)

  • Life has taken an unexpected turn.
  • Living with a brain injury does not mean your life is over. You can and will adapt.
  • Practice self-care more than anything.

11 MONTHS LATER

(Constant dizziness and return of vision loss – suspected ETV failure. Repeat ETV OR, place VP Shunt?)

  • A shunt is not a cure but you’ve got this. I know you’re tired of the roller coaster, and as scary as it all is, you are going to get through this!

*I’m looking for some positive self-talk to add to my awareness posts next month.
Feel free to comment or message me, if you prefer.

I blog about Hydrocephalus to give a voice to the millions (if not billions) of people around the world with this condition NOT disease.  As much as these experiences are unique to me and my family, I’m sure others have experienced it too.  My aim…to shine a light on it and raise awareness – simple and challenging at the same time but worth it!
